Gnome

Physicial Description

Gnomes stand about 3 to 3-1/2 feet tall and weigh 40 to 45 pounds. Their skin ranges from dark tan to woody brown, their hair is fair, and their eyes can be any shade of blue. Gnome males prefer short, carefully trimmed beards. Gnomes generally wear leather or earth tones, and they decorate their clothes with intricate stitching or fine jewelry. Gnomes reach adulthood at about age 40, and they live about 350 years, though some can live almost 500 years.

History

Gnome history is about curiousity and bewilderment… Originally thought to be a strain of Dwarf-kind due to their talents, ability, and rough size, the Dwarves scoffed at the claim informing other races these weaker creatures are closer to Halflings than to their staunch heritage… Still, the Gnomes consistently have attempted to befriend the Dwarf nations with almost no success despite their similiar needs, desires, and talents.

The primary issues between the two races revolves around the super energitic and cheerful quality of the Gnomes vs. the sour and gruff attitude of the Dwarves. This combination often makes “most” Dwarves wish to “beat” their attitude into most gnomes which ultimately fails… This usually bruises the Dwarf‘s ego and often makes the gnome feel unwanted (They usually don’t care so much though!)

These differences also appear in how each race introduces new ideas and concepts… Dwarves prefer tested and true working methods which could take decades of research while gnomes prefer a more radical approach usually involving less time(or no time at all!) Dwarven inventions also tend to be far more utilatarian while Gnomish inventions are often frivilous and pointless(according to the Dwarves anyway!)…

As such though many races have found gnomes invaluable within the arts of engineering, research, alchemy, and magic… The dwarves find their approach useless and pointeless leading to FAR more failures than is acceptable… Still EVERY other race sees gnomes as an adaptive and creative race with far more ability in their fields of study… In addition, not unlike halflings, humans as a whole find these tiny people hilarious and often allow large numbers to attach themselves to human settlements… The Dragon Lands are no exception…

Gnomish society is truly about learning… To a gnome any issue or problem has a “better” solution… This “better” solution can only be found through trial and error, meaning their should always be at least one failure before a successful “better” solution is found otherwise nothing was learned… In addition, even if a working solution to a problem is known, a gnome in practice will often attempt a new untested “better” solution to the problem. This leads many to believe gnomes are ALL inventors regardless of what art, skill, or talent they employ, but are also prone to wasting time…

The only truely strange factor to gnomish society when viewed by other races is their technology… Though they posess the same technology as humans from the Dragon Lands (They desperately wish to learn what the Dwarves know!!!) they seem capable of making that technology more advanced stretching it to do things that any other race would say was completely impossible…
